Slow Computer Performance

Slow Computer Performance

If your computer is running slowly, try these steps to improve its performance:

1. Restart Your Computer

  • A simple restart can clear temporary files and free up system resources.

2. Close Unnecessary Programs

  • Check your taskbar and close any applications you’re not actively using. Right-click on the program icon and select Close.

3. Check for Resource-Heavy Tasks

  • Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager.
  • Look for applications using high CPU or memory. If you find any unnecessary ones, right-click and select End Task.

4. Disable Startup Programs

  • Open Task Manager, go to the Startup tab, and disable programs you don’t need at startup.

5. Check for Malware

  • Run a full scan using your antivirus software. If disabled, please reach out to your IT.

6. Free Up Disk Space

  • Remove unnecessary files:
    • Delete Files in the Downloads Folder: Go to your Downloads folder and delete files you no longer need.
    • Uninstall Unused Programs: Go to Settings > Apps > Apps & features, and uninstall programs you don’t use.

7. Update Your Software

  • Ensure your operating system and applications are up to date. Go to Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update and check for updates. If disabled, please reach out to your IT.

8. Adjust Visual Effects

  • Right-click on This PC > Properties > Advanced system settings.
  • Under the Performance section, click Settings. Choose Adjust for best performance or customize which effects to disable.

9. Use Storage Sense

  • Go to Settings > System > Storage and turn on Storage Sense to automatically clean up temporary files.

10. Consider Upgrading Hardware

  • If your computer is still slow after troubleshooting, consider upgrading your RAM or switching from a traditional hard drive (HDD) to a solid-state drive (SSD) for better performance.
